As many of us predicted years ago, the return of mask mandates is officially here. Just over the past few weeks, Los Angeles, New York City, parts of Illinois and the San Francisco Bay Area have reinstated mask mandates in various settings and for various populations.

Despite being just weeks away from four years since the start of the first lockdowns and closures in the United States and most other parts of the world, the religious devotion to masking remains firmly in place. Perhaps even more concerning is the fact that many administrators are signaling to powerless, mask-skeptic customers, employees, patients or visitors that there will never be an end.

Take, for example, one of the largest hospital systems in Southern California, where a color coded chart, reminiscent of the dreaded, useless “tier” systems that were commonplace during earlier parts of COVID, greeted this writer at the entrance while walking in to visit his newborn son.
